When you look at all the small kitchen appliances available it gets overwhelming! Like how many appliances do you need? What kitchen appliances am I actually going to use? What appliances do I need to actually make cooking easier?? There are so many options!
Don’t worry Mama, I’ll help you figure it out!
And to make it even less overwhelming there are only 5 that you actually really need.
What I’m going to share are ‘bonus’ appliances, you know the ones you could actually do without but ones that will make cooking go so much faster!
And don’t get me wrong, I have more than these 5. In fact I have a pantry that’s almost full of appliances, but I only use those appliances once in a while, I could easily do without them. But since I already have them, and have the room to store them I’m not getting rid of them.
So what small appliances do you actually need in your kitchen?
A blender, a food processor, an instant pot (or slow cooker) a stand mixer, and an electric kettle.
Seriously that’s it! I’m going to go in a little deeper so that you know what to use them for and why it helps you save time to have them in your kitchen.
Why have a blender? There are so many things you can make much easier in a blender! Think baby food, smoothies, pureed soups, you can even make pancakes using your blender.
I don’t have an expensive brand and it works perfectly for our needs. While the more expensive brands will be able to make some smoothies and soups smoother, start with a cheaper, smaller blender and then if you find yourself wanting your food even smoother than you can invest in a better blender
It doesn’t matter if you buy an immersion blender (a small portable blender that you can use to blend inside a soup pan etc) or if you have a stand blender. I have both and in my experience they both do the same things!
So in all honesty, a food processor can do alot of the things a blender can do! But a blender can’t do everything that a food processor does! I use my food processor to chop veggies, to shred cheese, zucchini, carrots etc. Often you can puree food in a food processor as well, just not quite as smooth.
So if your really stuck on a budget go for the food processor instead of the blender.Hamilton Beach (70730) Food Processor & Vegetable Chopper with Bowl Scraper, 10 Cup,Cuisinart DLC-2009CHBMY Prep 9 9-Cup Food Processor, Brushed StainlessMini Food Chopper LINKChef Food Processor Onion Vegetable Garlic Chopper Electric 4 bi-level
Instant Pot (or slow cooker)
I LOVE my instant pot. In fact I almost never use my slow cooker anymore! If you already have a slow cooker, think of an instant pot as a really fast slow cooker. Check out the difference between the two appliances here! I love my instant pot mostly because I can set it and forget it, plus I don’t have to think about it in the morning to have the benefit of a crock-pot meal!
Check out these posts to see if you want a instant pot or a crock-pot and check out some of these recipes so you can see how easy it really is once you have one!
I use my stand mixer ALL the time. Seriously it comes out almost every day. While I do recommend you have a Cuisinart or a kitchen aid, there are smaller, cheaper versions too! They just aren’t as strong.
I’ll use my mixer to shred chicken, roasts, mix meatloaf, make pancakes, cakes, cookies etc!
If you really can’t swing the cost of a stand mixer! Even some of there cheaper options, get a hand held mixer! You’ll just have to hold the actual mixer lol. Plus, they aren’t as strong but they can still do most of the jobs that a stand mixer does!
Now this is another one that you can kinda do without. Mine broke a while back and I didn’t have one for about 3 months. But it was really annoying not having one! I found my self constantly going for my kettle and then realizing I didn’t have one.
Often my pasta recipes (especially stir-fry’s) I use rice noodles, so instead of having another pan on the stove I juts boil water in my kettle and let the noodles soak in a bowl.
You can also use it any time you only need a small amount of hot water, even for a baby’s bottle it can be so handy! And for only $10 its totally worth it to me to have a kettle around!
I hope this helped you decide what to get for your kitchen! Or if you don’t have one of these, that you now know how to make cooking in the kitchen easier. I promise that it really does make a big difference.
