How do you decide which instant pot is right for your family?

It does depend on a few things, how big is your family? Are you a family of 5? A family of 6? Or 8?

What are you going to be cooking in your instant pot? All one pan meals? Only a few sides? Do you want to be able to cook double to save some for leftovers or the freezer?

Are you going to be using it for meal prep or batch cooking?

All of these factors count when your choosing your instant pot size! If your only going to be using it for sides, and your only a family of 4 then you’ll be able to get away with a small size. A 3 or 4 quart.

But what if you decide to start also using to for one pot meals? Then suddenly your instant pot (or pressure cooker) is too small.

If you buy a bigger one (6 quart) but then you start to batch cook? Since you can cook so many dishes in your instant pot, even multiple dishes if you get the stackable pans, you’ll need to get a bigger one.

Here’s another thing to remember when deciding what size instant pot you need.

If your thinking that you only need a 6 quart because you need that much yogurt… well you actually need to get an 8 quart!

Like with any other pan, you can’t actually fill the inner pan right to the top. You have to count in the expansion that food will make, and foaming that will happen! So essentially at the most, you’ll only be using ⅔ of the size that you buy.

In all honesty, your best off buying at least a 6 quart ( that’s the size I have) or an 8 quart. Since they aren’t actually that big, you can’t go wrong with one that’s a little bigger.

The Lux has the function to pressure cook, sauté/brown, rice cooker, slow cooker, warmer and steaming! It does not have the yogurt function and can only cook on high pressure (the other models have the option to adjust your pressure)

Truthfully what instant pot do you need?

The one I have is the Duo, its got everything I need. I’m home a lot so I don’t need it to go on when I’m not around. And for all the extra cost of the Ultra, I really don’t think its worth it.

For the lid to close on it own? Ya don’t need that.

As long as your instant pot has the option to brown/sauté, and pressure setting (truthfully I’ve never adjusted my pressure yet) warming option your golden!

My instant pot has a lot of cooking options from chicken to stew to everything else, and the only button I’ve used is manual cook!

I don’t like to use the preset options because the appliance can’t tell if my meat is frozen , how big it is etc.

So unless money is no issue for you then I would stick with the Duo, its the middle one, with a few extra options if you need it but you’re not spending so much more for just a few options!

This would be an 8 quart! Currently there’s no bigger one. The smallest size is a 3 quart. The most common size is the 6 quart.

Do I need to buy accessories for my instant pot?

This all depends on what you’re going to be using it for. You will be able to make more food in your instant pot if you do have a few more accessories.

Like this steamer basket, and a pan. Right now I’ve had my instant pot for about 4 months, and I haven’t bought accessories yet. But pretty soon I will be getting this accessory bundle so that I can start experimenting more!

How is an instant pot (or pressure cooker) different from a slow cooker?

The short answer? An instant pot is a crock-pot on steroids! An instant pot and a slow cooker cook the same foods, the same set it and forget it method, but an instant pot will do it in about a ¼ of the time. Read this post: Is an instant pot different from a slow cooker?
